It happens to the best of us, and it usually sucks when it happens, but feeling like there isn’t a tv show for you to watch blows. On the other hand, having something to look forward to weekly is honestly a serotonin booster for me. It’s part of the reason I read manga and webcomics. And it’s also the reason I’m jealous of people who like shows like Survivor. But maybe it’s the overabundance of show choices, or maybe it feels like everything is trash lately, but it’s been one of those seasons that have felt lackluster. So here are a few TV show recommendations to help get you out of that funk.
TV Show Recommendations
Abbott Elementary
Abbott Elementary feels like it belongs in the TV era of 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, and The Office. I love a good workplace sitcom. Nothing is more relatable than dealing with an annoying coworker or a boss you don’t get along with. However, if Parks and Rec was a workplace sitcom poking fun at the government’s shortcomings, then Abbott Elementary is highlighting the shortcomings of our public school system while remaining hysterical. This is my top pick for must-watch tv right now.
Peaky Blinders
I won’t lie. The first time I tried to watch Peaky Blinders, I stopped halfway through season one. I couldn’t get through it. But then I gave it another try over the pandemic, and it hooked me. I binged five seasons in about a week. I had a hard time buying into the story at first, but I fell in love with the characters. Peaky Blinders is a great show, especially if you are into period dramas or old-school gangster stuff. Watching Thomas Shelby, the main character, character development is experiencing peak writing. If you give Peaky Blinders a chance, it will be some of the best TVs you watch.
Moon Knight
Like I said before, I like having something to look forward to weekly. Waiting for a new chapter of manga to come out on Sunday morning or an Episode of Attack on Titan on Sunday evenings is the serotonin boost I need weekly. And nothing gets me more excited than a good Marvel TV show.
Most Marvel shows don’t have the best pacing, and Moon Knight is no exception, but the draw of seeing comic book characters brought to live-action has not lost its appeal quite yet. And to see a character like Moon Knight, who doesn’t have the biggest mass appeal, is so refreshing after twelve years of the Avengers. So if you want to see a mercenary with Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D.) navigate the carnage and confusion that comes with the powers of an Egyptian god, then this is the show for you.
Bridgerton
Is Bridgerton for everybody? Absolutely not, but if you love romance period drama, this is perfect. But you probably already know about it since it took over social media when season one first came out. Season two recently dropped, and even though I haven’t watched it yet, it’s all over my TikTok. I feel that there are a few scenes in the new season that might compare to Mr. Darcy’s hand-holding scene from Kiera Knightley’s Pride and Prejudice. (IYKYK). Also, I just wanted to gas up Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear for winning a Grammy for their Unofficial Bridgerton Musical. One of the coolest things to watch unfold over the pandemic.
Halo
Halo is a controversial pick, I know. But I’m a sucker and can’t help myself from watching a live-action Master Chief. I don’t need it to be perfect. I don’t even need it to be good. All I need is for it to exist. My bar is so low, and I should probably raise my standards more than they are, but we’ve been burned by almost every video game to live-action adaptation that I don’t care about quality anymore. They’ve beaten me down. I don’t want to talk about this pick more than that because most people hate it because all the Halo community does is hate on everything and complain about it.
If you’re curious about some of my thoughts on the show, I wrote a review on the first episode.
Spy x Family
It’s no secret. I love anime. It’s the version of television that I consume the most. A whole generation of us grew up watching Naruto on Toonami. So when I tell you I am so excited to see Spy x Family animated, know that I am speaking as a complete and utter weeb. I don’t want to give away too much, but a spy puts together a fake family for a mission to befriend a high-ranking official from an enemy state. The kicker is that his fake wife is an assassin, and his fake daughter is a telepath, and they don’t know that about each other.
It’s a crazy and ridiculous premise filled with action, but Spy x Family is hilarious. So watch out for it during Crunchyroll’s anime of the year award.
Stop Scrolling through Options
TV is weird. Either there is a show everyone in the world is watching (think Game of Thrones or Euphoria), or everyone is in a no man’s land searching for the next best thing to watch. The grind of finding something to watch is brutal in between shows. There are times when I feel like I spend more time on the menu looking for a show than I do watch one. So hopefully, this list helps you get out of the indecisive blender and lets you enjoy your downtime instead of stressing over a decision that shouldn’t be as hard as it is.
