Mother’s Day is this Sunday, so consider this your forty-eight-hour warning if you forgot about it. And if you’re anything like me, you probably thrive in the chaos of planning last minute, but don’t forget that Mother’s Day isn’t about the things you give your mom. Instead, mother’s Day is about appreciating your mom. It’s not any more complicated than that. It’s all about the time, thought, and effort you put into making your mom feel special on a day dedicated to her.

Ways to Show Your Appreciation

Take your mom to brunch

Taking your mom to brunch on Mother’s Day is the most cliche and basic thing you can do, but it’s an absolute banger of a thing to do. It’s a great way to show your mom you appreciate her. It gives her a chance to dress up and feel special to the people she loves the most. Think about how you feel when someone plans on taking you out to dinner on your birthday. Getting treated specially by someone else makes you feel like a million bucks, and out of everyone in the world, your mom deserves it the most.

Cook your mom dinner

Maybe you know how to cook, maybe you don’t, but cooking a fancy dinner for your mom highlights how much you love her. Maybe you had to take cooking lessons leading up to Mother’s Day to make sure not to burn the house down. Or maybe you’ve already spent a lot of time in the kitchen and wanted to up your game on a fancy meal for your mom. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you took the time to plan something for her and put in the effort to show your mom how much you love and appreciate her.

Clean the house

I genuinely believe that there is no better gift you can give a mother than a clean house. And by a clean house, I don’t mean picking up a small mess in the living room or loading the dishwasher. I’m talking about a deep clean. The kind of cleaning has you bleach bombing every corner of the house and listening to your cleaning playlist of all the songs your mom used to blast Saturday morning when she would wake you up to clean.

And if your mom is particular about how things should be cleaned, let’s be honest, there are people out there that are like that. Then instead of cleaning the inside of the house, you can clean the outside. Do some yard work. Pull some weeds and clean up the hedges or pressure wash the driveway. Find something that needs fixing and do it, then tell your dad it’s his early Father’s Day gift.

Write your mom a letter

It may be the writer in me or my inability to verbalize my love to those I care about in my life, but writing a letter is such a simple but fantastic idea. It not only literally lets you tell your mom how much you love her, but it also lets her have something to keep. She probably desperately wants to replace all of the pasta art you gave her when you were a kid.

Mother’s Day

Like I said earlier, Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and you should put a reminder on your phone, so you call your mom if you live far away. Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be the biggest event, but you should at least make your mom feel seen on Sunday. It doesn’t take much, just a little time, thought, and effort.

And if you want some help figuring out what to get her here’s a breakdown on more Mother’s Day ideas and here’s guide on what to get your mom on Mother’s Day.
